With the arrival of Offensive Coordinator Rod Smith, a reloaded quarterback room, and a team full of fresh faces, the 2025 season for Marshall football is shaping up to be one of transition and anticipation. A new-look roster, a largely new coaching staff, and a new offensive identity mean the quarterback position is wide open—and one of the most important storylines to follow in the months ahead.
Here’s an early projection of how things might shake out under center for the Herd this fall.
⸻
QB4 – Koi Fagan (Freshman)

Fagan is an in-state star—a former West Virginia Player of the Year and state champion—who brings elite athleticism and an exciting future. He’s a dynamic playmaker with great instincts and mobility, but being a true freshman, he’ll need time to adjust to the speed and complexity of the college game.
Expect Fagan to soak in every bit of experience possible this year behind the scenes. His talent is clear, but this season is likely more about development than contribution.
⸻
QB3 – JacQai Long (Redshirt Freshman)

Long was a standout at Hurricane High School, and he’s made big strides since arriving in Huntington. He spent last season getting acclimated, building chemistry with the staff, and learning the offensive system. He’s added size, grown in his football IQ, and has been called “the future of Marshall football” by Head Coach Tony Gibson.

Though still working through some freshman inconsistencies, his potential is undeniable. Long may not be ready to lead the offense this fall—but he could absolutely be the long-term answer for the Herd.
⸻
QB2 – Zion Turner (Redshirt Junior)

Turner brings something many others in the room lack: experience. He started games for UConn as a freshman, throwing for over 1,400 yards and 9 touchdowns, and rushed for 262 yards. After transferring to Jacksonville State, Turner served as a backup under Coach Rod Smith, giving him a familiarity with the current Marshall offensive system.

Turner is elusive, has a quick release, and can extend plays with his feet. While he might not emerge as QB1, he’s likely to see snaps throughout the year and offers value with his versatility and system knowledge.
⸻
QB1 – Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (Junior)

All signs point to Carlos Del Rio-Wilson being the early leader for the starting job. The former Syracuse Orange QB brings solid Power 5 experience, having thrown for 624 yards and 4 touchdowns, along with 148 rushing yards and a score in limited action.
Del Rio-Wilson impressed during the 2025 spring game, showcasing a strong arm and growing poise in the pocket. Perhaps more importantly, he’s begun to establish himself as one of the team’s vocal leaders.

Coach Rod Smith and Head Coach Tony Gibson have both praised his progress, with Coach Gibson confirming that “as of right now, Carlos is the starter.” If his decision-making and pocket presence continue to improve, Del Rio-Wilson could have a big year in store.
⸻
The Bottom Line
Marshall fans will see a very different team in 2025. A new offensive coordinator, a nearly completely revamped roster, and competition at nearly every position—including quarterback.
While Del Rio-Wilson leads the race heading into fall, Turner brings experience, Long has massive upside, and Fagan is a name to remember down the line.
One thing’s for sure: Rod Smith’s offense will be fast, creative, and competitive, and the man leading it under center will play a huge role in shaping this new era of Herd football.
Get your popcorn ready, Herd Nation. The QB battle has just begun.
